Scams and Local Neighbourhood Watch Information    12 June, 2020

A person called Tom or another name are phoning locally again wishing to check your loft insulation, saying that they have carried out loft insulation in the past and want to check that it is OK or some similar story.   They are using 01635 800 numbers so if that comes up, don’t answer then do 1471 to obtain their number and to check it is nobody you know, dial the number with 141 in front to remain anonymous and you will most probably find that the number will not be recognised. They buy blocks of numbers cheaply on the internet and are crafty with the 01635 code. They are not working for the Government or West Berkshire Council.

Also, TV Licensing and HMRC scam emails are circulating again.

Always forward any scam emails or ones that you are not sure whether a scam or not to report@phishing.gov.uk as they are monitoring and closing down many email addresses and this is proving to be very successful at the moment.

Spam texts are also being received purporting to be from PayPal advising that someone has tried to log into your account and to unlock your account, you need to click on a link to resolve this issue.    If you do receive any spam texts you can report them directly to your mobile phone provider by forwarding the text message free of charge to 7726.  It would then be worthwhile blocking that number on your mobile.

National Neighbourhood Watch has a website: www.ourwatch.org.uk   It gives you the opportunity to list and map your NHW scheme and receive their newsletter, plus gives lots of other useful information.

If you do not currently have a Neighbourhood Watch scheme in your road, with all the lovely community spirit at the moment and neighbours getting to know one another, it is the ideal time to set up a Neighbourhood Watch scheme in part or all of your road.   If you would like Angela Money to send you details of how to set up a scheme, please phone 01635 40866 or email ajmy5m7@inbox.com  and she will make contact with you.  With email now, it is so easy to forward the Police/NHW/Action Fraud Alerts on to your neighbours. Neighbourhood Watch signs, stickers and leaflets are free plus all neighbours receive various local discounts.  It is important for more schemes to be set up as this will help combat crime and make the community a safer place to live.

All members of a Neighbourhood Watch scheme in West Berkshire are entitled to various discounts.   I am attaching details of all the discounts and codes that need to be quoted when contacting the relevant Companies including a new one for CCTV and other security products.
(Have just received a call to say that the ERA discount offer is no longer available).
